Bushveld Complex (BC)

  • 300km (East - West) synclinal basin containing vast quantities of PGMs and chromite.
  • Higher underground thermal gradient than the gold-bearing Witwatersrand Basin, requiring refrigeration for underground mines deeper than 700 metres. High underground temperatures reduce labour productivity, the highest cost element of mining. Generally, costs increase sharply with depth.
  • PGMs occur more than 3km deep at the basin centre. Northam Platinum, the deepest mine on the BC, operates at 2km.
  • The BC hosts over 80% of the remaining global PGM supply.
  • Most of the world’s PGM supply was mined from the BC.
  • The BC hosts 80% global chrome resources.
